REVIEW: Grasping at Eternity by Karen Amanda Hooper

Grasping at Eternity (The Kindrily, #1)
Leave it to Maryah Woodsen to break the one rule that will screw up eternity: Never erase your memories.

Before entering this life, Maryah did the unthinkable—she erased. Now, at seventeen years old, she’s clueless that her new adoptive family has known her for centuries, that they are perpetually reincarnated souls, and that they have supernatural abilities. Oh, and she's supposed to love (not despise) Nathan, the green-eyed daredevil who saved her life.

Nathan is convinced his family’s plan to spark Maryah's memory is hopeless, but his love for her is undying. After spending (and remembering) so many lifetimes together, being around an empty version of his soulmate is heart shattering. He hates acting like a stalker, but has no choice because the evil outcast who murdered Maryah in their last lifetime is still after her.

While Maryah’s hunter inches closer, she and Nathan make assumptions and hide secrets that rip them further apart. Maryah has to believe in the magic within her, Nathan must have faith in the power of their love, and both need to grasp onto the truth before they lose each other forever—and discover just how lonely eternity can be.

MY THOUGHTS
The idea of reincarnation is an idea that has always intrigued me! I just find the idea that one person could have possibly lived many different lifetimes incredibly fascinating! But I always have trouble finding books that successfully do this. This is because reincarnation in books almost always focuses on soul mates. And, unfortunately, this is one of them.

A lot of people may enjoy books with the whole soul mate thing, but I not a big fan of books with too much of a focus on romance and yes, this book did focus on that. I also don't believe in soul mates. Sorry, but I find that idea ridiculous and cliche.

There was a few other things that were turn offs for me. I was a bit annoyed because the entire book was basically Maryah having no idea what's going on and her kindrily (those who were her family in past lives) not telling her anything. It made too much drama and I couldn't help but feel sorry for Maryah because she was very confused (Although, I loved how she noticed how her 'family' said odd things and acted in strange ways! Many books don't point those things out!). The plot was also very predictable, as I've seen many similar plots in lots of other YA books. But, to be honest, these things weren't really a big deal to me. The soul mate thing was my major problem.

Now, I don't want to bash and bash on this book, because this is not a terrible book! I could tell the author is a wonderful writer! And the ideas in this book are completely original and complex! I can't go into full-on detail on what the reincarnation is like and the kindrly because it's much better to hear these things on your own (and the book would do a much better job at explaining it!). I also liked the beginning focus of the plot, where Maryah doesn't have any memory. I found this to be very curious.

IN CONCLUSION
My main problem is that this book is just not my thing. Back when I added this book onto my TBR list (2 years ago) I was really into paranormal romances and yes, I was perfectly fine with cliche. But I'm now not a big fan of either paranormal or romances. They're just no longer my thing. So, I'm not going to tell people to not read this book because a lot of people like this book! It has a 4.09 average rating on Goodreads! So, if you like paranormal romance, books with soul mates, original ideas, and semi-predictable plots, then you should read this book! But if your like me and prefer a little less romance, pass this one up.

As far as reading the sequel, I'm going to go with no. I still have some questions, but this book series isn't really my thing so I see no point in continuing.

I hereby give this book
2 Wheels
Meaning: It was okay
