Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Cover Redesigns (For Better and For Worse)

Hosted each week by The Broke and the Bookish, it's a meme for listing the top ten for everything bookish.
NOTICE:Today's Top Ten is actually "Rewind". meaning that I choose a previous Top Ten topic. I'm not sure if this was a Top Ten topic, but I'm doing it anyway.

Cover redesigns can be irritating.
Redesigns absolutely LOVE to mess up our bookshelves so the covers won't match (this especially happens when the covers change in the middle of a frexing series!)
Then there are the beautiful covers that are redesigned into, well, complete crap.

Cover redesigns can also be a blessing.
Sometimes a really ugly cover will be redesigned into something beautiful!
(this rarely seems to happen though)

My point is that some cover redesigns are bad, some are good.

*These are in no certain order*

FOR WORSE
Let's start with the bad news first.
These are the cover redesigns that I was not too happy about.
1.Across the Universe trilogy by Beth Revis
Original
Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1)A Million Suns (Across the Universe, #2)
Redesign
Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1)A Million Suns (Across the Universe, #2)Shades of Earth (Across the Universe, #3)
The first covers are some of my favorite covers!
And they're changed to boring metal covers.

2.The Diviners series by Libba Bray
Original
The Diviners (The Diviners, #1)
Redesign
The DivinersLair of Dreams (The Diviners, #2)
What were they thinking?!
"The first cover is too plain. Let's have a new cover! This time with people that glow!"
How was this a good idea?!?!

3.Secrets of the Eternal Rose series by Fiona Paul
Original
Venom (Secrets of the Eternal Rose, #1)Belladonna (Secrets of the Eternal Rose, #2)
Redesign
Venom (Secrets of the Eternal Rose, #1)Belladonna (Secrets of the Eternal Rose, #2)Starling (Secrets of the Eternal Rose, #3)
The first covers are beautiful.
The new ones look like cheesy romance covers...

4.The Cahill Witch Chronicles by Jessica Spotswood
Original
Born Wicked (The Cahill Witch Chronicles, #1)
Redesign
Born Wicked (The Cahill Witch Chronicles, #1)Star Cursed (The Cahill Witch Chronicles, #2)Sisters' Fate (The Cahill Witch Chronicles, #3)
The new covers just bore me.

5.Crewel World series by Gennifer Albin
Original
Crewel (Crewel World, #1)
Redesign
CrewelAltered (Crewel World, #2)Unraveled (Crewel World, #3)
The first cover was gorgeous! Then we get the generic girl covers...

FOR BETTER
Now for the good news!
These are the covers I actually liked!
6.Curse Workers series by Holly Black
Original
White Cat (Curse Workers, #1)Red Glove (Curse Workers, #2)
Redesign
White Cat (Curse Workers, #1)Red Glove (Curse Workers, #2)Black Heart (Curse Workers, #3)
I don't know why, but I find the first covers laughable!

7. Ashes trilogy by IlsaJ. Bick
Original
Ashes (Ashes Trilogy, #1)
Redesign
Ashes (Ashes Trilogy, #1)Shadows (Ashes Trilogy, #2)Monsters (Ashes Trilogy, #3)
I am so happy that they changed these covers!! That first one gives me nightmares! *shudders*

8.Shatter Me trilogy by Tahereh Mafi
Original
Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)
Redesign
Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2)Ignite Me (Shatter Me, #3)
So glad that they changed the cover!
Beautiful Eyes trump Random Girl in Prom Dress any day.

9.Anna and the French Kiss series by Stephenie Perkins
Original
Anna and the French Kiss (Anna and the French Kiss, #1)Lola and the Boy Next Door (Anna and the French Kiss, #2)
Redesign
Anna and the French Kiss (Anna and the French Kiss, #1)Lola and the Boy Next Door (Anna and the French Kiss, #2)Isla and the Happily Ever After
The first ones are not horrible, but I prefer the new ones.

10.Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas
Original
Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1)
Redesign
Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1)Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2)
The first cover wasn't bad, but Celaena looks more badass in the newer covers.

There's a whole lot more that I could have added, but in the essence of time, these are my favorite and least favorite cover redesigns.

  1. I agree with you. Sometimes a cover redesign really is for better or worse. I definitely prefer the Shatter Me redesigns!

  2. I agree with all of these choices. Some cover redesign is so necessary, others are celebratory (like the Harry Potter anniversary covers), and others are terrible!

  3. Great pick. I absolutely agree with all of them... except one - I actually prefer the new Fiona Paul covers but that is the first time I am seeing either. Nice list :) My TTT.

  4. I think I absolutely agree with everything on this list!! Particularly the Shatter Me and Throne of Glass redesigns. *shudders* Who put Juliette in a white tutu anyway?? She never even wore a white tutu!!! It's just ludicrous. It's sad they changed the Beth Revis ones. My TTT!

  5. Great list! I also hate cover redesigns halfway through a series, it completely wrecks the continuity of the books sitting on the shelf for me. And I agree with you, I don't mind Stephanie Perkin's original covers but the redesign just, I don't know, looks better :D
